About Rats in Leeds

The Brown Rat (also called the Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus) typically weighs up to 500 g and measures ~23 cm (body only). It has a blunt muzzle, small hair-covered ears and a tail shorter than the body length. Brown rats prefer ground-level harbourages and will burrow under sheds, patios, banks and refuse tips to nest.

Rats breed all year. A female can produce up to 5 litters per year with 5–8 young per litter. They feed mostly at night, choosing sites that provide food, water and shelter. Established populations create regular runs between nests and food sources and leave up to ~40 droppings per day (about 12 mm, tapered at both ends).

Risks & Damage

Rats contaminate food and surfaces and can transmit pathogens associated with food-borne illness. Their continuously growing incisors drive constant gnawing, which can damage woodwork, pipes, packaging and electrical cabling, occasionally causing shorts, fires or leaks.

Typical Signs of Rats

  • Burrows, runs and smear marks along walls and pipework
  • Droppings (~12 mm, tapered) often in latrine areas
  • Gnaw marks on doors, skirtings, cables and feed sacks
  • Scratching or thumping noises (lofts, voids, under floors)
  • Ammonia-like odour in heavy infestations

Our Rat Control Service

  • Full survey to locate harbourages, burrows, entry points and food/water sources
  • Professional-grade control: tamper-resistant bait stations and/or trapping programmes
  • Targeted placement in secure, out-of-reach locations; external burrow baiting where appropriate
  • Proofing recommendations (and optional minor proofing) to stop re-entry
  • Follow-up visits (typically 2–3 visits) until activity clears
  • Commercial documentation for audits and compliance

Preparation & Cooperation (for Best Results)

  • Remove food sources: store in sealed containers; clean spills promptly.
  • Reduce harbourage: declutter, lift items off floors, keep external areas tidy.
  • Do not move or block bait stations or traps once placed.
  • Report fresh sightings, gnawing or burrow openings between visits.
  • Allow access to lofts, under-sink voids, outbuildings and perimeter areas.

Where pets or children are present, we tailor programmes with secure stations and, where suitable, trap-first or non-toxic monitoring approaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get rid of rats safely?
We combine a detailed survey with secure bait stations and/or traps positioned along rat runs and harbourages. We also remove attractants and advise on proofing for long-term control.
Are your treatments safe around children and pets?
Yes. We use tamper-resistant stations and can deploy trap-first or non-toxic monitoring where appropriate. You’ll receive clear safety guidance at each visit.
How many visits will it take?
Most infestations resolve within 2–3 visits over 2–4 weeks, depending on severity, site access and cooperation with hygiene/proofing steps.
Will you block holes and entry points?
We identify ingress routes and provide proofing recommendations (mesh, cementing, brush strips, drainage checks). Minor proofing may be included; larger works can be quoted.
What’s the difference between rat and mouse droppings?
Rat droppings are larger (~12 mm) and typically clustered with tapered ends. Mouse droppings are smaller (3–6 mm), often scattered. We confirm species during the survey.
Do you provide commercial pest control contracts?
Yes — we offer scheduled inspections, electronic reporting and compliance documentation for restaurants, food production, warehouses and facilities managers.
Which areas do you cover?
Leeds and surrounding West Yorkshire: Bradford, Wakefield, Harrogate, York and Huddersfield.
