Pigeon Proofing in Leeds and West Yorkshire

Fouling, blocked gutters and noisy roosts on ledges and roofs are hard to clear while birds can return. We fit lawful, humane proofing that stops them settling.

Home › Pigeon Proofing

Feral pigeons roost and nest wherever there is shelter and a flat ledge. Their droppings are acidic, stain stonework, block gutters and downpipes, and leave paths and entrances slippery. Dried droppings and nesting debris can also carry organisms that affect health, so clearing them needs suitable protective equipment and care. Feeding by passers-by or by staff at lunchtime can keep a flock on a site, so we also talk through the habits that encourage birds to stay.

Wild birds are protected by law, so proofing must be lawful and humane. The aim is to stop birds landing and nesting, not to harm them, and the right system depends on the structure. Netting suits recesses and open frames, spikes and sloping systems suit ledges and sills, and wire or mesh can protect solar panels and other awkward spots. Gutters packed with nesting material can overflow into walls, which is one reason a roost near a roofline becomes more costly if it is left.

Across Leeds and West Yorkshire we see the problem on stone mills, warehouses, shop fronts, flats, car parks and ordinary house roofs. We survey first to see where the birds are roosting, then recommend a system. We offer free surveys for homes and businesses, and our technicians are fully insured and trained. We will tell you honestly if a smaller fix such as a single run of wire is enough, rather than fitting more than the building needs.

Signs you may need pigeon proofing

  • Droppings building up on ledges, window sills, signs and pavements below
  • Gutters, hoppers or downpipes blocked with nesting material
  • Birds roosting or nesting under eaves, canopies or loading bay roofs
  • Noise, feathers and debris around vents, chimneys or roof valleys
  • Staining on stonework, glass or cladding beneath a favourite perch
  • Birds nesting beneath solar panels or inside open roof structures

How we deal with it

We survey the building to find the roosting and nesting spots and how the birds reach them.

We recommend a proofing system suited to the structure, such as netting, spikes or wire.

We clear nests and droppings where it is lawful and safe to do so, using the right protective equipment.

We fit the proofing neatly and securely, with access arranged to suit the site.

We check the work and advise on any gaps, and on keeping gutters and ledges clear.

Frequently asked questions

Is pigeon proofing legal?

Yes, as long as it is done lawfully and humanely. Wild birds and their active nests are protected, so some work may need to wait until nesting has finished. If you are unsure about a particular situation, check the rules before removing anything.

Will spikes hurt the birds?

Bird spikes are designed to stop pigeons landing, not to injure them. Correctly fitted, they make a ledge unusable rather than dangerous. Netting and wire do the same job in other places. We choose the system to suit the building.

Do you clean up droppings as well?

Where the situation needs it, yes. Droppings and nesting debris should be handled with suitable protective equipment, so we clear affected areas as part of the job where that is sensible and safe, and we will agree this with you first.

How much does pigeon proofing cost?

It depends on the height and access, the length of ledge or area to be covered, the type of system chosen and how much clearing is required. We can give you a free quote after a survey or a look at photographs.
