Rats are good at finding a way in. They can squeeze through a gap not much wider than a thumb, climb pipes and brickwork, and swim through drains. Outdoors they live in burrows under sheds, decking, compost heaps and along riverbanks and canal edges, and when the weather turns colder they look for warmth and food inside. A rat that has found a bird feeder or an open bin will keep coming back.
Signs are usually plain once you know them: dark droppings the size of a grain of rice, gnawed cables or pipes, greasy marks along walls, burrows beside foundations, and scratching in a loft or under the floor at night.
