Batley's Victorian rag-recycling trade left it with solid stone terraces and former mill buildings. They are sturdy, but their age gives pests plenty of ways in.
The mill buildings that once processed shoddy are now units, storage or housing, and they share a feature common to old industrial buildings: lots of floor space, little maintenance of unused corners and plenty of heat from pipes. That suits mice, cockroaches and other insects, and the high ledges and roof timbers suit pigeons. We check the roof and ledges as well as the ground floor.
Batley's terraces are rows of stone housing with party walls and cellars. A noise in one house can be heard through the wall of another, and the same is true of pests. In practice we treat the property reported, check for obvious signs next door, and make recommendations about proofing. Wasps, ants and fleas are seasonal extras that arrive in the warm months. Keep a note of dates and places for sightings.
Cleaning and basic deterrents can help, but wild birds are protected, so any proofing must be lawful and humane. Droppings can also carry health risks, so use gloves and a mask or leave it to us.
Yes, where the pest and the property call for it. Rodent and flea treatments usually need a second visit to check progress. We tell you at the outset what is likely and what the quote covers.
Most people never see the pest itself, only what it leaves behind. Here is how to read the clues in your home and work out what you are dealing with before you spend money on a fix.

Read the advice →Prevention works better when it follows the calendar. Different pests become active at different times, so a few small jobs in the right season do more than one big clear-out.

Thank you Sean and Zack for your speedy and efficient response to our wasp problem. We originally thought we had 2 wasps nests but on the end had 4. After our initial call they came out the next day and even came out a few days later when another next was discovered. Thank you, we will definitely recommend you.Mrs Carter8 August 2018
