Otley is a Wharfe-side market town with the Chevin forest park above it. Between the river, the woodland and the older stone buildings, wildlife pests are part of the picture.
A town with woodland above it and a river through it will see squirrels, rats and wasps more than most. Squirrels move from the trees into lofts, and a pair nesting in a roof space can be heard long before they are seen. Rats follow the river bank and drains into properties close to the water, particularly where food waste is left out.
In the older stone property near the centre, gaps in stonework and around roof timbers suit mice and birds looking for shelter. Newer housing around the edges has fewer of those gaps, but gardens and sheds bring rats and wasps. We start with a survey, check roof spaces, outbuildings and drains, then explain which problems need treating and which need proofing instead.
Avoid blocking holes until you are sure nothing is inside, as animals can become trapped. Squirrels can chew cables, so it is worth having a survey. We will advise on lawful removal and on proofing the entry point afterwards.
Nests grow through summer and the colony dies off in autumn, so the busiest period is late summer. Treating a nest earlier, while it is small, is usually simpler. If one appears near a door or play area, ring us and ask about a same-day appointment.
Most people never see the pest itself, only what it leaves behind. Here is how to read the clues in your home and work out what you are dealing with before you spend money on a fix.
Read the advice →Clearing a pest problem is rarely about one product. It is a short sequence of jobs, done in the right order, and the order matters more than the brand of spray in the cupboard.

Read the advice →Pests rarely announce themselves. This guide covers the early warning signs, the damage that follows if they are left alone, and the health and property risks worth taking seriously.
Read the advice →Prevention works better when it follows the calendar. Different pests become active at different times, so a few small jobs in the right season do more than one big clear-out.
