Heckmondwike's carpet-making and textile past is still visible in its mill buildings and stone terraces. Fibres, fabrics and warm old buildings all matter when it comes to pests.
A town with a carpet and textile heritage naturally raises questions about fabric pests. Carpet beetle larvae, bristly little creatures often called woolly bears, and clothes-moth larvae both feed on natural fibres such as wool, so rugs, upholstery and stored clothing are worth checking. It is the larvae that do the damage, not the adults. Check under furniture and along skirting edges first.
The mill buildings and stone terraces also welcome the usual visitors. Mice and rats move through voids and drains, pigeons use ledges, and wasps nest in quiet roof corners. If you are converting or reusing an old building, a survey before work begins is sensible, since stripping out walls and floors tends to disturb whatever has been living there. Ask us to look at the whole building, not only one room.
Look for small bristly larvae, shed skins and irregular holes in wool, felt or fur items, often along edges and under furniture. Adult beetles may be found on window sills. A technician can confirm the species before treatment.
Only partly. Clothes-moth larvae also feed in wardrobes, stored garments and under furniture. Treatment has to cover those places, and washing or freezing infested items often helps alongside it. We look at the whole area.
Most people never see the pest itself, only what it leaves behind. Here is how to read the clues in your home and work out what you are dealing with before you spend money on a fix.
Read the advice →Clearing a pest problem is rarely about one product. It is a short sequence of jobs, done in the right order, and the order matters more than the brand of spray in the cupboard.
