Bed bugs are not known for spreading disease, yet they can affect sleep, skin and peace of mind. This guide covers the signs, the health points and the damage they can cause.
The most common sign is waking with itchy red marks that were not there the night before. Look at the bedding too: tiny dark spots on the sheets or mattress seams, small blood smears and pale shed skins are typical. Live bugs, often at the corners of the headboard or in the mattress piping, confirm the problem. A sweet, musty odour is sometimes noticeable in bad cases.
Not every itchy bite is a bed bug. Mosquitoes, fleas, mites and dry skin can all look similar, and some rashes have nothing to do with insects. That is why it is sensible to look for droppings, skins or live bugs in the bed before starting a treatment, and to see a doctor if a rash is severe or spreading.
Bites usually appear on skin that is exposed during sleep, such as the arms, shoulders, neck and face. They often show as small raised welts, sometimes in a line or cluster. Reactions vary from nothing at all to marked itching and swelling. Scratching can break the skin and lead to infection, so keep the area clean and speak to a pharmacist or doctor if it worsens.
Bed bugs are not considered to spread disease in the way that some biting insects do. The bigger impact is often sleep. People report broken nights, anxiety about going to bed and tiredness through the day. If you are finding it hard to cope, that is a common experience and worth discussing with your doctor.
The insects do not eat fabric or wood, but the problem can still cause losses. Soiled mattresses, stained bedding and furniture that can no longer be kept may need replacing. In holiday lets, hotels and rented property, an infestation can also mean cancelled bookings and difficult conversations between landlords and tenants.
A few bugs can become many within weeks, and adults can survive for months without a meal. The longer the delay, the further they spread and the more work is needed. Avoid moving furniture or taking bedding to a laundrette before you have advice, as that can carry bugs elsewhere.
Emotional strain is a real risk too. People often feel embarrassed, and some are reluctant to invite friends or family home. Bed bugs are not caused by poor hygiene, and anyone can bring them back from a trip. Acting calmly and early, with proper advice, resolves most cases.

They are not generally considered to transmit disease. The main problems are itchy bites, possible skin infection from scratching, poor sleep and the stress that the situation causes. See a doctor if bites become infected or you are struggling.
People react differently. Some develop obvious welts, others notice little or nothing, and a reaction may take days to appear. This is why bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs and why a physical inspection is useful.
Adults can survive for months without a meal, depending on temperature and conditions. That is why leaving a room empty rarely clears the problem and why a proper treatment is usually necessary.
