How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are hard to clear because they hide in tiny gaps and their eggs resist many treatments. Success comes from preparation, a thorough treatment and follow-up, not a single spray.

Confirm the problem first

Before spending money, make sure the cause is bed bugs. Check seams, slats and headboards for live insects, dark spots and shed skins. Treating the wrong pest wastes time, and a bite pattern alone is not enough evidence. Interceptor cups under the bed legs help confirm activity and show whether the bugs are climbing up from the floor.

Heat is a real strength against bed bugs. Washing at a high temperature followed by a hot tumble dry kills every stage, which makes laundry the easiest part to do well. Items that cannot be washed, such as soft toys or cushions, can often go through a hot tumble dry alone for a good length of time, which is worth trying before anything is thrown away.

Prepare the room

  • Strip the bed and put bedding straight into sealed bags
  • Wash at a high temperature and tumble dry on hot, which kills all stages
  • Declutter around the bed, but do not carry items through the house
  • Vacuum slowly along seams and crevices, then bag and bin the contents outside

Do not move the infested furniture into another room. It may feel sensible, but it often moves the problem with you.

Treatment options

Professional treatment commonly combines targeted insecticides applied into hiding places with steam or heat to reach eggs and insects deep in furniture. Because eggs may hatch after the first visit, a second visit is usually needed to deal with the survivors. Exactly how many visits are needed depends on the property and the extent of the problem. Mattress encasements can help by trapping bugs inside and removing hiding places.

What not to do

Avoid foggers and bug bombs, which can drive insects deeper into walls and spread them. Do not burn or throw out mattresses without advice, since dragging them through the building can scatter bugs. Over-the-counter sprays kill some insects on contact but often leave the hidden ones untouched, and bed bugs in many areas have developed resistance to some common products.

Keep sleeping in your own bed during treatment if you can. Moving to a sofa or a spare room tends to spread the infestation.

Follow-up and monitoring

After treatment, keep interceptors in place and keep checking for fresh droppings or bites. A small number of bugs may still appear in the first couple of weeks, which does not necessarily mean the work failed. If activity continues after the planned visits, tell the technician so they can review hiding places they may have missed. Shared walls in flats and terraces can make this more complicated, so neighbours may need to be told.

Patience pays. Bed bugs hide for long periods and can go many weeks without feeding, so a quiet few days after treatment does not prove success. Keep monitoring the bed, keep interceptors in place and report any new bites or sightings, because a quick second look is easier than a returning infestation.

Questions on this topic

Can I get rid of bed bugs with just washing?

Washing at a high temperature and tumble drying kills bugs in fabric, but it does not reach the ones in the frame, walls or furniture. It is an important part of preparation, not a complete treatment by itself.

How long does it take to clear bed bugs?

It depends on the number of bugs and how many places they have reached. Most treatments run over a few weeks, with at least one follow-up visit to catch newly hatched insects.

Should I throw my mattress away?

Not automatically. A mattress can often be treated or encased. If it is damaged beyond use, wrap it in plastic before moving it so bugs do not drop off along the route, and ask for advice first.
