DIY or Professional Flea Control?

Many flea problems start small and respond to good housekeeping and the right pet treatment. The difficult ones need a wider approach, and knowing which you have saves time and money.

What DIY does well

If you have caught it early, with one pet and a few bites, a thorough routine can work. Treat the pet through your vet, wash all bedding on a hot cycle and vacuum every day for a couple of weeks. A home flea spray used strictly to the label may also help, covering carpets, skirting and sofas. The key is consistency, since the life cycle can last several weeks.

Cost and effort are the usual reasons people try DIY first. That is understandable, and for a light problem it often works. Set yourself a deadline of a few weeks: if the bites and sightings are clearly decreasing, carry on. If they are not, the problem is probably bigger than it looked and extra help will save frustration.

When DIY struggles

  • Several pets, or animals that roam outdoors and bring fleas back
  • Deep carpets throughout the property, including stairs and bedrooms
  • Fleas that keep returning after two or three rounds of home treatment
  • A property that was empty, or which came with a pet history
  • Sources such as rodents or birds in the loft or under floors

Shop-bought products vary, and many people apply them unevenly or miss edges and under-furniture areas where larvae gather.

What a professional adds

A technician inspects to find where the fleas are concentrated and whether wildlife is involved. Professional products, including insect growth regulators, are applied evenly across floors, soft furnishings and cracks, and the visit can be planned around your pets. Where the cause is outside the house, such as a nest in the eaves, they can deal with that as well.

The vet's role

Even when the home is treated professionally, the pet still needs proper flea protection. Treating the building alone does not prevent a pet bringing in new fleas, so the two go hand in hand. Always check with your vet before using any product on a pet, especially a cat, puppy, kitten or an animal with health concerns.

If you have used two rounds of home treatment and are still being bitten, a survey will probably save you effort.

Choosing a contractor

Ask about the survey, the number of visits and the preparation expected from you. Check that technicians are trained and the business is insured. Ask how pets should be managed during and after the visit, and be wary of anyone who gives a firm price without hearing about the property. Good advice is plain and specific.

If you rent your home, tell the landlord or agent, as responsibility may depend on the tenancy and on where the fleas came from. Keep a note of what you have done and when, including pet treatments and cleaning. That record helps a technician understand what has already been tried, and avoids repeating what has not worked.

Questions on this topic

Can I use a professional treatment and my vet's treatment together?

Yes, and it is the usual recommendation. Professional treatment clears the home, while your vet's products protect the pet. Tell the technician about any pets and any medication so the visit can be planned around them.

Are over-the-counter flea bombs worth buying?

They are not very dependable. Fog tends to settle on surfaces and may not reach into carpet fibres, under furniture or into cracks, where larvae live. A targeted spray applied carefully is generally more useful.

How do I know when to call a professional?

Consider it if bites continue after two or three weeks of consistent home treatment, if the property is large or heavily carpeted, or if you suspect wildlife in the loft or under floors. A survey will clarify matters.
