How to Prevent Fleas

Preventing fleas is mostly about routine. A steady habit with pets, bedding and floors costs little time and spares you from a full outbreak later.

Keep pets protected all year

The most effective step is regular treatment of every cat and dog, using a product your vet recommends. Many households stop in winter, but central heating lets fleas breed indoors throughout the year. Check the schedule on the product and set a reminder, because a missed dose is a common starting point for an outbreak.

A weekly routine works well. Pick a day to wash the pet bedding, vacuum the main rooms and comb your pet over a white sheet. It takes only a short time, and it turns up flea dirt early. Many people find that combining it with another regular chore means it actually gets done.

Cleaning habits that help

  • Wash pet bedding on a hot cycle every week or two
  • Vacuum floors, sofas and pet resting areas regularly, including edges and under furniture
  • Empty the vacuum or bin the bag straight away, outside the house
  • Wash throws and cushion covers where pets sleep or sit

Regular vacuuming removes eggs and larvae before they mature. It costs almost nothing, works well, and it also shows you early whether fleas are present.

Look at the garden and outbuildings

Cats and dogs can pick up fleas where other animals shelter, such as under sheds, decking and bushes. Keep those spaces tidy, and discourage wild animals from settling by clearing debris and securing bins. If birds or rodents are nesting in eaves or the loft, deal with the nest and the access, as their fleas will otherwise seek out a new host.

Moving in or returning home

Fleas can wait as pupae for a long time in an empty property. If you are moving into a home that previously had pets, or returning after weeks away, the first footsteps can trigger a hatch. Vacuum thoroughly on arrival and, if you notice bites, ask for advice before the problem settles in. Landlords and holiday-let owners may wish to check floors between occupants.

Do not wait for a bite. If a pet is scratching, comb it over white paper and look for flea dirt.

Visitors and shared spaces

Pets that visit boarding kennels, groomers or friends' houses can bring fleas back. Check coats afterwards, and keep up treatments if your animal mixes with others. Shared hallways in flats may carry fleas from one home to another if a neighbour has an untreated pet.

Think about the doorways in as well. Mats and rugs where pets sit by the door collect eggs and are often the first place fleas establish. Washing or vacuuming them regularly, and discouraging stray cats from using your doorstep or garden as a resting place, cuts the number of fleas reaching the house. If you foster animals or look after friends' pets, treat the visitor as you would your own, because one untreated animal can start an outbreak.

Questions on this topic

Do indoor cats need flea treatment?

They can still pick up fleas from visitors, other pets, clothing or a previous occupant's leftovers. Your vet can advise on whether an indoor cat needs regular treatment. Many vets suggest it, especially in homes with other pets.

Does vacuuming really prevent fleas?

It helps. Vacuuming removes eggs, larvae and some pupae from carpets and furniture, and the vibration brings adults out. It does not replace pet treatments, but it reduces the numbers that can build up.

What should I do before moving into a property that had pets?

Vacuum all floors and soft furnishings on the first day and watch for jumping insects or bites. If you notice either, get advice early. A pre-move check can pick up the problem before you unpack.
