Otley's older stone property below the Chevin has plenty of quiet corners for carpet beetle larvae, and newer housing nearby is just as open to them.
Older buildings in the centre of Otley tend to have thick walls, timber floors, chimney breasts and cupboards that are seldom emptied. That suits carpet beetles. Larvae feed on wool rugs, felt, feathers and animal hair, and they can also live on the debris of dead insects in a cavity. A stone cottage with a spare room full of keepsakes and linen is a classic place to find them.
Housing around the edges of the town is newer, with fitted carpets and built-in storage, where the first sign is usually a ragged edge or an adult beetle on a windowsill. Being near the Chevin forest park and the Wharfe means plenty of pollen for adults outdoors, and they drift in through open windows in warmer months. We check the rooms most likely to be quiet and treat what we find.
Adults are drawn to light and fly to windows, and outdoors they feed on pollen from flowers. Seeing one is not proof of an infestation, but several in the same room can point to larvae feeding nearby, and it is worth checking.
Treatment depends on the property and what is being treated, and we choose the method to suit the room and fabrics. Mention the age and any special features when you call, and we will explain what is practical after seeing it.
