Older town-centre buildings and newer estates call for different handling in Pontefract, yet the squirrel problem is the same: an animal in the roof.
With its castle ruins and liquorice-growing past, Pontefract has a town centre of older property, and estates of later housing around it. The older buildings tend to have varied roofs, with chimney stacks, parapets and valleys, where flashings and mortar fail over time. Estate houses are plainer but not immune. In both settings, a squirrel enters at a point we can usually find with patience and a good torch.
Where a building is old or protected, we take care about how and where proofing is fitted, and you may need to check what consent applies. In ordinary houses the job is quicker. We look at the nest, the damage to insulation and wiring and whether young are present. Removal is lawful and humane. Pricing depends on the property, the number of visits and the proofing needed, and a free quote is available.
They can nest in chimneys anywhere. An uncapped flue lets them in, and a nest can block ventilation. If you suspect this, avoid lighting a fire until it has been checked. Capping the chimney is often the long-term answer.
It depends on materials and exposure. Properly fitted chew-resistant mesh and fillers can last many years, but weather and movement may open new gaps, so an occasional look at the roof edge is sensible. We explain what we used and what to watch.
