Large stone villas below Ilkley Moor have roof spaces, cellars and outbuildings that suit mice very well. We survey the lot and treat what we find.
A big Victorian villa is a lot of building for mice to explore. Cellars, pantries, servants' stairs, tall roof voids and long runs of pipework give them room to nest far from the rooms you use. The moor above town and the River Wharfe nearby mean wild ground is close, so mice move in as autumn arrives. The first sign can be a smell in a seldom-used room.
Surveying a large house takes time, so we work methodically from the outside in: stonework, airbricks, drains and door gaps first, then cellar, kitchen, loft and any converted flats within the building. Stone terraces nearby need the same attention but on a smaller scale. We choose traps or bait according to where pets and children are, and we return to check progress. Fully insured and trained technicians carry out the work, and a free survey is available.
It can take more time, because there are more places to check and more routes between floors. A thorough survey and a staged treatment plan usually deal with it, and we revisit to confirm. Old houses give them more room than most.
They are worth checking. Old flues and boarded fireplaces can be routes for mice, and nests sometimes build up behind them. We look at these during the survey and advise what can sensibly be sealed. Pets and children are always considered.
