Large Victorian villas below Ilkley Moor have many rooms, deep cupboards and plenty of textiles. That is a good habitat for carpet beetle larvae, so a full inspection pays.
The scale of an Ilkley villa is the problem. Rooms on the second floor, a box room full of curtains, a cellar with old rugs and a long run of stair carpet give carpet beetles many places to start and few reasons to be found. Larvae feed slowly on wool, silk, feathers and fur, so damage can run for a long time before a pattern emerges.
Stone terraces in the town have the same cupboards on a smaller scale. We work through a house in a sensible order: the rooms with the most natural fibre first, then the edges and voids around them, and the loft last. Findings go to you plainly: where larvae are, what they are feeding on, what should be laundered, and what is worth keeping. Treatment is limited to the places that need it.
It takes longer to inspect, because there are more rooms and storage spaces, but the principle is the same. We find where larvae are feeding and treat those areas. The extent of the problem and the size of the property affect the quote, which is free.
Only if they show damage or cast skins, or if larvae are found nearby. Wool and silk curtains are attractive to larvae, particularly along the hem and behind pelmets. Dry cleaning or hot treatment may suit them, depending on the fabric.
