Beside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Shipley, stone terraces and old mill buildings give squirrels sheltered roofs. We find the gap and close it.
Shipley's stone terraces and mill conversions sit next to Saltaire and the canal, and that mixture of old roofing and waterside setting suits squirrels. A terrace roof carries a line of eaves, gutters and chimney bases, each a potential entry. A mill conversion adds a larger roof void and perhaps a flat roof, where felt can be torn. The sound is the same: running, scratching and sometimes gnawing overhead in daylight.
Waterside property can bring its own difficulty, because access for ladders or platforms may be tight along a towpath or narrow yard. We plan around that at the survey stage. Once the entry point is identified, we remove the animals by lawful, humane methods, tidy the nesting material and fit chew-resistant proofing. In converted buildings we also look at shared roof voids, because a squirrel does not respect flat boundaries.
They can if there is a lifted edge, a torn membrane or a gap where the flat section meets a wall. Flat roofs are less common targets than pitched ones, but not immune. We check junctions and edges, and a roofer may be needed for larger repairs.
Be careful. Droppings and nesting material can carry bacteria, wiring may be damaged, and loft floors can be fragile. If you must look, wear gloves and a mask, step only on joists and do not touch chewed cables. Otherwise, call 0113 347 0014 and we will inspect.
