Old cottages and new estates sit side by side in Silsden. Squirrels target both, and we look at the roof, not just the loft, to find how they got in.
Silsden is a large village on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Airedale, and its older stone cottages differ greatly from the newer estates. A cottage may have a low, irregular roof with small gaps beneath ancient stonework and slates. An estate house has a regular pitched roof with plastic soffits and fascias that can be lifted or gnawed. Hearing movement above you in the daytime is the usual first clue.
A cottage loft can be cramped, which makes thorough inspection harder, and we sometimes need to look from several angles to see the nest. In estate houses the work is often quicker but the entry may be hidden behind a fascia board. Either way we remove animals humanely, clear nesting debris and proof the roof. If a cable has been chewed, switch off the circuit if you can do so safely and call an electrician.
They make the job slower but rarely impossible. We use torches, mirrors and careful access to look into corners, and sometimes the nest is found from outside by tracing the entry. If part of a loft is unsafe to enter, we will say so and work around it.
If you can see damaged cable and it is safe to reach the consumer unit, turning off that circuit is sensible, but only if you are confident. Do not touch the damaged wire. Have a qualified electrician check it, and tell us so we can work around it.
