Between Batley and Cleckheaton, Birstall's older stone housing and later estates both give carpet beetles somewhere quiet to feed. We find it and treat it.
Often the first thing a homeowner finds is not the larva but a bald patch on a rug or a moth-eaten look to a wool coat. In Birstall that story is common in the older stone housing, where wardrobes are deep and loft space is ample. Adults fly in during spring, lay eggs in a quiet spot, and the larvae feed through the following months.
On the later estates, carpet runs unbroken through most of the house, and damage tends to appear where furniture sits against walls. A radiator with a gap behind it collects hair and lint like a trap. We check carpets, upholstery, wardrobes and lofts in turn, and we say clearly what we think is happening. Treatment follows, and so does advice on laundering and storage.
Both eat wool and make similar holes. Clothes moth larvae spin silky tubes and leave fine frass, while carpet beetle larvae are bristly and leave cast skins. Often an inspection picks out which one it is, and sometimes both are present.
Avoid moving damaged items between rooms, as that can spread larvae. Seal suspect items in bags and keep a few cast skins or larvae in a sealed container or photograph them. Hot-washing washable items is safe, but leave carpets and furniture as they are.

Thank you Sean and Zack for your speedy and efficient response to our wasp problem. We originally thought we had 2 wasps nests but on the end had 4. After our initial call they came out the next day and even came out a few days later when another next was discovered. Thank you, we will definitely recommend you.Mrs Carter8 August 2018
