Cleckheaton's textile past mirrors what carpet beetle larvae eat. In stone terraces and later estates alike, we locate their feeding sites and treat them.
A house in a textile town may or may not have more wool in it, but it often has older fixtures that suit carpet beetles: horsehair or wool-filled furniture, long-lived rugs, heavy curtains. In Cleckheaton's stone terraces these items sit beside timber floors and fireplace recesses where fluff and dead insects accumulate and keep larvae fed through the quieter months.
Estates built later in the Spen Valley raise newer concerns. Wool-mix carpet, underlay and stored bedding can serve the same purpose. People often discover the problem when moving furniture, finding a ragged patch the shape of a wardrobe base. We check the room, vacuum and sample debris, and look at wardrobes and the loft. Treatment is then planned around the extent of what we find and the number of visits needed.
It is small, usually a few millimetres, oval, and covered in bristly hairs, often banded brown. It is sometimes called a woolly bear. The hairs are visible with a magnifier, and the skin it sheds looks like a tiny hairy husk.
It depends on the property and the extent of the problem. A small, caught-early case may need one visit; a long-established one can need follow-up. We explain this when we quote, and the quote is free.
