Exposed, hilly Denholme encourages heavy rugs, thick curtains and plenty of stored wool. Those are what carpet beetle larvae feed on, and we know where to look.
Properties on exposed moorland edges are kept warm with heavy furnishings, and that is a reasonable description of much of Denholme: stone terraces and later houses with thick curtains, wool rugs and extra blankets stored for the winter. For carpet beetles, that is a supply of food. The beetle itself is very small, and it is the larvae you are more likely to meet.
A common route into the home here is through the loft or an outbuilding, where old nests and dead flies pile up and larvae live on them. They then travel down walls and through gaps into bedrooms and cupboards. Our visit covers both: we look at the damage you have found and then follow the trail back. Where larvae are active we treat, and we explain what to wash before the next cold season.
Clean them first, since soiled wool is more attractive to larvae, and keep them in sealed bags or lidded boxes. Checking stored items occasionally is worthwhile. Sealing only protects clean fabric, so it will not help if eggs or larvae are already in them.
Cold slows them but does not reliably clear an indoor problem, since heated homes keep larvae active. Freezing small items at a sufficiently low temperature for long enough can help. For carpets and furniture, inspection and treatment are more dependable.
