Carpet beetle larvae can work unseen in a Leeds terrace or city flat for months before the first bald patch appears. We trace where they are feeding and treat it.
Leeds is a city of mixed housing, and carpet beetles behave differently in each type. Victorian back-to-backs and through terraces in Headingley and Hyde Park often have bare boards with deep gaps, where lint and hair collect and the bristly larvae feed on it undisturbed. Student lets add a second problem: second-hand sofas, rugs and wool throws arriving and leaving each year, carrying whatever is already living in them.
City-centre flats and warehouse conversions are quieter but not immune. Adults fly in through windows in spring, lay eggs in a wardrobe or beneath a radiator, and the larvae then spend months eating wool, felt, fur and feathers. Canal-side and riverside homes near the Aire can also have bird or insect debris in roof voids that feeds them. We inspect the likely harbourage points first, then decide what needs treating.
Carpet beetle larvae are small, bristly and brown-banded, and they leave cast skins that look like tiny husks. Clothes-moth larvae are pale and smooth inside silky tubes. Damage is similar, so a photo or an inspection helps settle which one you have.
Usually the landlord arranges treatment, but the tenant can help by clearing floors and wardrobes and washing fabrics hot. Furniture that arrives from elsewhere should be checked before it goes in. We can look at the property and advise who needs to do what.
