Morley's woollen mill past is a fair hint at what carpet beetle larvae like: wool, felt and hair. We look at where they are feeding in your home and treat it.
Wool is what carpet beetle larvae are built to eat, so it hardly matters whether a house stands in a former mill town or not. What does matter is the age of the property. In Morley the Victorian stone terraces often have original floors with gaps, and older wool carpets, rugs and horsehair-style furniture stuffing that suit the larvae well. Damage is usually slow and patchy rather than sudden.
Later estates around the town are a different case. Fitted carpet with a good underlay can hide a population for a long time, and the first sign is often a ragged edge beside a radiator. Pet hair collecting under furniture gives the larvae extra food. We look at both the visible damage and the hidden spots, then treat so that the surviving larvae and eggs are dealt with rather than just the ones in view.
Larvae feed where they are undisturbed and food is available, such as under furniture or at the carpet edge. The rest of the carpet may look fine. Patchy damage in odd places is typical, and it often means the colony is small and localised.
Regular, thorough hoovering removes larvae, eggs and the lint they feed on, and it is worth doing along edges and under furniture. It rarely clears an established problem on its own, so treatment may still be needed where larvae are actively feeding.
