Sowerby Bridge lies where two waterways meet at the bottom of a steep valley, and shaded terraces there can stay damp long after the rain stops.
Light matters more than people expect. On steep valley sides, terraces can be shaded for much of the day in winter, so walls stay cold and wet and indoor air struggles to dry. In Sowerby Bridge, with the Rochdale Canal and the Calder and Hebble Navigation close together, moisture hangs around valley-bottom buildings too. Booklice are not drawn to the valley itself, only to the mould that these conditions encourage.
We usually start in the room that gets the least sun and the least warmth. Behind a bed, inside a built-in cupboard or at the foot of an external wall are favourite spots. Mill buildings rising up the valley sides can present similar problems in their stores. After treatment we talk through simple changes to airflow, with no call-out charges and same-day appointments available when diaries allow.
Sunlight warms walls and helps moisture evaporate. In rooms that rarely get sun, surfaces stay cooler, condensation lasts longer and mould forms more easily. That does not mean booklice, but it makes them more likely. Heating and airflow can compensate.
They can, travelling on boxes, furniture or along damp surfaces, particularly if mould is widespread. They usually concentrate where conditions suit them. Treating the whole affected area early, and drying the rooms, limits the spread.
