Where the Rochdale Canal meets the Calder and Hebble Navigation, buildings stack up steep valley sides. Squirrels use that stacking to reach the roofs.
Sowerby Bridge is built where two waterways meet, and its stone terraces and mill buildings rise in tiers up the valley sides. Roof levels run into one another, hillside gardens reach the eaves and walls double as ladders. For a squirrel the whole town is a climbing frame. When we survey here, we trace routes from the ground up, noting retaining walls, steps and trees as well as the gaps themselves.
Most work is in homes, though the mill buildings by the water have their own needs. Their large roofs and high walls mean access has to be planned, and we do not take chances. After the survey, removal is lawful and humane, followed by clearing the nest and proofing the entry. We tell you what the damage is, whether wiring is affected and which repairs belong to a roofer or electrician.
Roof repairs such as replacing slates, fascia boards or lead flashing belong to a roofer, and damaged wiring to an electrician. We remove the animals, clear nests and fit proofing, then tell you what else we saw so you can arrange those repairs.
Yes. An unsealed opening stays an invitation, and animals that have used a loft once may return or others may follow. Proofing is the lasting part of the work.
