Halifax's stone terraces on steep slopes and its former mill buildings give carpet beetle larvae warm, dusty hiding places. We find them, then treat the source.
A terrace built into a Halifax slope often has rooms at different ground levels, with thick stone behind them and old timber floors over empty voids. In these voids, years of dust, hair and the odd dead insect can accumulate, and carpet beetle larvae will eat it happily. They then come up through gaps by the skirting and begin feeding on wool, felt or fur above.
Former mill buildings in the town now hold flats, studios and storage, with large open floors and soft furnishings. A sofa left against a wall for years can host a long-running colony. Same-day appointments are available, and we start by identifying exactly what we are dealing with, since clothes moths and carpet beetles need different thinking. Then we treat the places that are really being used.
Clothes-moth larvae are pale, smooth and live in silk webbing, while carpet beetle larvae are brown, bristly and leave cast skins. Adult moths are buff and flutter; adult beetles are tiny and mottled. Treatment is similar but not identical.
Bag them and keep them apart until you know the source. If it is a washable item, a hot wash may be enough. Valuable items can be cleaned by a specialist. Non-washable ones may need freezing or disposal.
