On the Lancashire border where three valleys meet, Todmorden's stone terraces and former mills give carpet beetle larvae plenty of cover. We find and treat them.
Stone terraces in Todmorden stand in tight rows along steep valley sides, with canal and riverside property below. They are comfortable homes, often with old floors and wool furnishings, and carpet beetle larvae can settle in them just as in any other. The first sign may be a patch on a stair carpet or an unexplained scatter of fine husks in a drawer.
Former mills now used for flats, studios and small businesses have long lengths of carpet, upholstery and stored fabric, all of which can sustain a population. Because the town has three valleys' worth of housing, the property types vary a great deal, so we do not assume a standard layout. We check what is in front of us: the damage, the surroundings and the routes the larvae could have taken. Commercial service contracts are available.
Describe or photograph what you see: larvae, husks, damage, or adult insects. We can often tell from that, and an inspection settles it. Other things, such as clothes moths, booklice or simple wear, can look similar.
Vacuum edges and under furniture regularly, wash or dry clean wool before storing, and keep stored items in sealed containers. Check cupboards a few times a year. These habits remove the food and undisturbed spots larvae depend on.
